North Queensland Resilience Program

About

On 7 February 2024, the Australian Government announced a $91.8 million funding package to support disaster recovery and resilience activities for northern, Far North and north-west Queensland communities. The North Queensland Resilience Program is designed to help with the long-term needs of some of the most remote disaster-prone parts of the state.

Three new initiatives will support eligible communities and primary producers to recover from significant monsoonal flooding experienced over a number of years and will strengthen the region to future severe weather events. This funding package includes:

  • North Queensland Resilience Program – $84.8 million
  • Restocking and On-farm Infrastructure Grants Program – $5 million
  • On-farm Resilience Study – $2 million.

North Queensland Resilience Program – $84.8 million

  • Allocative grants program to support local and regional disaster resilience.
  • Available for regional projects in the following LGAs: 
    • Burke Shire Council
    • Carpentaria Shire Council
    • Cloncurry Shire Council
    • Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council
    • Etheridge Shire Council
    • Flinders Shire Council
    • McKinlay Shire Council
    • Mount Isa Shire Council
    • Richmond Shire Council
    • Burdekin Shire Council
    • Charters Towers Regional Council
    • Hinchinbrook Shire Council
    • Townsville City Council
    • Boulia Shire Council
    • Whitsunday Regional Council
    • Winton Shire Council
    • Douglas Shire Council
    • Mornington Shire Council
  • Administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).

Restocking and On-farm Infrastructure Grants Program – $5 million

  • Co-contribution grants up to $150,000 to primary producers to replace lost livestock and restore or replace lost or damaged on-farm infrastructure.

    • Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council
    • Mount Isa Shire Council
    • Boulia Shire Council
    • Mornington Shire
  • Administered by the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA).

On-farm Resilience Study – $2 million

  • Will identify the feasibility of livestock refuge mounds and other on-farm resilient equipment and infrastructure options.
  • Study will cover the following LGAs: 
    • Burke Shire Council
    • Carpentaria Shire Council
    • Cloncurry Shire Council
    • Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council
    • Etheridge Shire Council
    • Flinders Shire Council
    • McKinlay Shire Council
    • Mount Isa Shire Council

  • Developed and administered by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

Status

  • Applications have been received and are currently under review 
  • Project prioritisation will occur by August 2024 
  • Successful Applicants will be notified by October 2024 
  • Projects to be completed by June 2027
